Samoa have got their four reserve players staying at my airport motel. It is the opposite of football where, if a team needed some late replacements for an injured player in the squad, they would fly them out at the last minute. When it comes to rugby, or at least the Samoans, the reserves actually come out early. A bit strange though that the IRB will only put the main squad and officials up in a hotel, while the four reserves have to stay somewhere else.
I did see one gargantuan Polynesian-looking fella wandering around reception looking bored during the early hours of the morning as I battled my jet lag demons. I thought he was a local security guard or something and gave him an 'alright mate?!', but now I am assuming he was one of the blokes in question. Shame, I would like to have indulged him in a semi-drunken, jet-lagged chat about the meaning of life as he saw it.
